Simon Rogan expands to Keswick – how to get Michelin food at home during your self-catering holiday

Cumbria is arguably the food capital of Britain. The county has seven restaurants that have been awarded a total of eight stars by the Michelin guide.

This may not sound all that many. But Cumbria has a population of a mere 498,000 which means it has a Michelin starred restaurant for every 62,250 head of population, a density far exceeding London’s ratio of one for every 118,000 and not far behind the one for every 40,000 found in Tokyo, the city with more Michelin stars than anywhere else in the world.

The man who really pioneered Cumbria’s modern fine dining push is Simon Rogan, who opened his L’Enclume restaurant in Cartmel in 2002. It is now frequently voted Britain’s best restaurant. During lockdown, L’Enclume became one of the first upmarket restaurants to start at-home deliveries, using ingredients that were mostly grown on Simon’s farm or from local suppliers. But there was a catch – through April, May and June the dishes were only delivered to a small number of villages around Cartmel in the south Lakes.

The exciting news is that Simon Rogan at Home is, from July 10, expanding the delivery area throughout most of the Lake District, including up to Keswick. Three courses cost £30 and the food is delivered either on a Friday or a Saturday. All you need to do is warm it up in the oven, plate it up, and occasionally sprinkle on a garnish or pipe on some cream. There is even a video to show how to do it, if you're unsure. You need to book by 9am on the Tuesday of that week in order to secure a delivery. So, guests coming to stay at Endymion House need to plan ahead and book the food before they travel to the Lakes. Delivery costs £4.95, regardless of how many portions you order.

The menu on the weekend of July 17/18 is:

- Sourdough with Whipped Butter

- Chilled Broth of Our Farm Vegetables, Holker Estate Curd, Kohlrabi

- Confit Chicken from Goosnargh, Roscoff Onion, Elderflower

- Woodruff Parfait with Poached Cherries and Caramelised White Chocolate

Vegetarian Menu:

- Sourdough with Whipped Butter

- Chilled Broth of Our Farm Vegetables, Holker Estate Curd, Kohlrabi

- Slow Roasted Beetroot Steak, Roscoff Onion, Elderflower

- Woodruff Parfait with Poached Cherries and Caramelised White Chocolate

If you want the delivery to be on the Friday of your arrival – and you are arriving too late to take delivery of the food yourself – please inform us in advance. And we can ensure the Simon Rogan at Home team leave in waiting for you in the fridge.
